What Is Home Care?

Home care allows older adults to age in place in the comfort of their own home while a professional caregiver assists with daily tasks. This allows them to maintain the independence they desire.

Why Use Home Care?

The vast majority of seniors would prefer to live at home, however this can prove to be a challenge. As we get older, we tend to lose strength, mobility, coordination. This can make normal, daily activities challenging or unsafe. Home care services make aging in place possible so seniors can continue living at home safely and comfortably.

Benefits of Aging In Place

According to one survey done by AARP, 90% of older adults expressed the desire to remain living at home for as long as possible. But given the challenges of aging, it can be hard to decide if aging in place or a senior living facility is right for your aging loved one. This decision may be easier for you when you are aware of why living at home is so important to seniors' quality of life. Consider the following benefits of aging in place.

While physical and cognitive decline can make total independence no longer possible, seniors can still enjoy a measure of independence with the help of family, friends, and professional caregivers. This means maintaining control over their routine, activities, and life decisions. Staying at home also allows seniors to enjoy a sense of familiarity, comfort, security, and dignity that many living in senior care facilities cannot enjoy. A very critical and underrated factor in seniors' quality of life.

Another factor to consider is emotional and physical health. The emotional toll of leaving home can put seniors at high risk of stress and depression, which accelerates physical and cognitive decline. And studies show that those living in senior care facilities are at high risk of contracting bacterial and viral infections.

And of course another very important factor to consider is cost. Although living at home has the price of hiring an in-home caregiver, and possibly modifying their home to make it safer, aging in place is typically less expensive than living in a facility. In Texas, the average yearly costs for a shared room in a facility range from $49,000 to $76,000, with private rooms averaging $63,000 to $130,000 a year.
